Sunday Synergy ~ God’s Eyes with Donna Haley

May 19 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Ojos de Dios (oh-ho-day-DEE-ohs), “god’s eyes,” are ritual objects made by the Huichol (wet-chol) indigenous people of Mexico. The Huichol symbolism of the god’s eyes is primarily associated with the prayers for their children – prayers for a good long life, protection and to insure abundant crops.

Bring several sticks or dowels 6-12 inches long, yarns of different colors you like, and beads or charms to weave into your artwork.

Join Donna Haley on Sunday, May 19th, at 12:30 pm and learn how to make your very own God’s Eye!

About Donna Haley

Donna began her service to Virginia Cooperative Extension in 1996 as a Master Gardener. In 2012, she took on the title of Master Naturalist as well. She often completes her service hours volunteering for the speakers bureau or coordinating outreach and education for these groups.

Donna, as an ethno-botanist, taught horticulture at Virginia Western Community College at Greenfield. She was a “Tank Team” member at the Ocean in the Mountains Aquarium at Center in the Square in Roanoke, and a Science Museum volunteer. She also enjoys volunteering for the Blue Ridge Mountains Council Boy Scouts of America and served on their Council Conservation Committee. Donna is an inaugural member of the Blue Ridge Environmental Educators.

Learning new things is what keeps her fueled for adventure. Herbs, native plants, ferns, fungi and water gardens are all topics of interest. Donna likes to travel as well. Her favorite quote from Thomas Jefferson is “though I am an old man, I am a young gardener.” She also has a fascination with bees and hummingbirds.

She is a long time geocacher, and a recent presenter at the Virginia Environmental Educators Conference. She is a 2015 Citizens for Clean and Green, City of Roanoke Green Academy graduate. Donna is currently a rose care specialist at Unity of Roanoke Valley, and has a moon garden. She has recently completed a large ViCAP Rain Garden with MCSWCD, in Botetourt County, where she resides with her husband Dan.
